Case Study - Essay Example Basement and much of first floor occupying the administrative office, emergency room, operations, and cafeteria were flooded to about six feet. When we inspected the premises to put up a temporary office along with surgical suites and clinical laboratory on the second floor, which was not affected by flood water, we noticed heaps of trash and debris. The task I was assigned, to guide Incident Commander on the safe entry, cleanup procedure, appropriate PPE for all recovery works, and hazard assessment for the most critical items or operations that can cause acute or chronic health effects, illness or disease, was most challenging. We recognized that without organizational skills and knowledge of time tested processes we will achieve little with manpower, massive resources, and technical expertise. Only through a definite written plan, adequate training and basic safety knowledge of the workers engaged in cleaning, and a centralized control and coordination such a herculian activity could be materialized. To achieve the goal, following broad overview of the duties and recommendations has been chartered, according to priority, and submitted to the Incident Commander: ââ¬Å"Industrial hygienists recognize that engineering, work practice, and administrative controls are the primary means of reducing employee exposure to occupational hazards. Engineering controls minimize employee exposure by either reducing or removing the hazard at the source or isolating the worker from the hazards.â⬠(NOSH interim recommendations for the cleaning and remediation of flood-contaminated HVAC system: A guide for building owner and managers, 2004). Being a hospital, the main Industrial Hygiene concerns for our team and the clean-up recovery workers were exposure to skin and respiratory disorders. It is possible that during flooding the systems for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) could

Character and Setting in Popular Music :: Music Communication Essays
Character and Setting in Popular Music Whether it is through music or written literature, such as a novel, characters convey emotion and thought. The audience understands through the characters present. Just as we find characters we love we also find characters we despise. Setting is much the same. Whether the setting is explicitly given or simply implied, the audience has a picture in mind. Sometimes it is a place of great beauty and sometimes it is a place we would rather disregard. It is my observations however that character and setting are to some extent present in every song I listen to. Character and setting are not only additions to music and songs, but seem to be what makes the songs. Of the popular music available today, we can find songs dedicated to telling a story about a lost loved one, a favorite place of recluse, love in general. But not each of the popular songs lay out the setting or give the embodiment of a character. Listening to these songs however, the listener is transposed into the song and can see as the speaker talks. For example, Alicia Keysââ¬â¢s song ââ¬Å"Diary.â⬠This song is the voice of a woman speaking to her lover. ââ¬Å"Lay your head down on my pillow,â⬠she sings. ââ¬Å"Here you can be yourself.â⬠So from the beginning we are invited to witness the sweet whispers of lovers in a room. The bed, inviting and comfortable, sits in center stage. We listen to the woman tell of her love and the security her man can find in her and she in him. ââ¬Å"I am the pages of your diary,â⬠she sings. Again, Alicia does not tell us all the details, but somehow the picture is so clear. Another example of a popular song that has setting and character is a song by India Arie entitled ââ¬Å"Nature.â⬠In this song she is telling a loved one to slow down: ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s sit and watch the flowers growâ⬠¦letââ¬â¢s sit and watch the river flow.â⬠She believes that nature is a show and there is music there. And although she doesnââ¬â¢t really give us a clear character we can relate to, we can see the singer as the character.

Environmental Science in Todayââ¬â¢s World Essay
Humans so dominate todayââ¬â¢s world that there is no ecosystem on earth that has not been influenced to a greater or lesser degree of human activities. And, as long as humans remain on earth, such influence will not end. Sustainability will depend on learning to channel our efforts so that we play a positive supporting role as opposed to a destructive role toward ecosystems (Nebel & Wright, 1993). Environmental risk is a reality of todayââ¬â¢s world. The seemingly endless supply of synthetic chemicals, consumer goods, energy, and waste create new risks through chemical contamination, pollution, and environmental degradation. Environmental disasters such as chemical spills or explosions threaten millions of people living in the vicinity of manufacturing or storage facilities. The uncertain risks of global warming and ozone depletion loom ahead. A central factor of environmental risk is that it is usually involuntary. People do not choose to ingest chemical pollutants such as pesticides or industrial solvents in their food and water, to undergo workplace exposures to dangerous chemicals, to breathe polluted air, or to experience radiation exposure from nuclear fallout or faulty nuclear power plants. These environmental risks pose a unique problem to regulators charged with protecting the public health. Limited information may be available on the health effects of these risks. Consequently, in an effort to protect the publicââ¬â¢s health, various government agencies study these potential hazards to determine the level of risk they pose. This effort to understand these risks, and to quantify their impact on human health, is the field of risk analysis (Moore, 2002). The scale of human occupation and transformation of the environment is now truly global. The adverse health effects of this ignorance may have been limited, as the environmental damage was on a local scale. However, in todayââ¬â¢s world our activities are having an impact at a global scale, and global environmental change will become a major theme in public health research, social policy and development, and political advocacy in the 21st century. The conceptualization of the environment as a global public good for health should go some way not only in increasing an appreciation for this heritage and dependency, but should also enhance the interface between research and policy. This increased awareness and interface between key stakeholders might lead to effective action to ensure a sustainable future for current and future generations (Hester & Harrison, 2002).

Why Should The Lgbt Community Serve Openly - 1924 Words
Why Should the LGBT Community Serve Openly? Why exactly should we allow the LGBT community to serve openly in the military? There are many reasons that can, in the long run affect us as a society. Why should we care about other people and the gender that they choose to be? When we are at war and fighting for our country would that really matter ! These very reasons and many more are what steer the LGBT community away from the military. The LGBT community should be able to serve openly in the military because gender identity has nothing to do with physical ability, the ban is an act of discrimination, and the American Constitution proposes a society based in inclusion not exclusion. The LGBT community should be able the serve openly in the military because gender identity has nothing to do with physical ability. Sexual orientation is which one he/she desires to be with. For example, a woman with a woman would be the lesbian community, a man with a man would be the gay community, a man or a woman who chooses to be with either sex would be your bisexual community, and the transgender community would be men or women that have gone under surgeries or procedures that change their gender identity. ââ¬Å"GenderShow MoreRelatedWhy Should The Lgbt Community Serve Openly?1899 Words à |à 8 PagesWhy Should the LGBT Community Serve Openly? Portrayal of Asian-Americans in the Canceled Sitcom, All...
Portrayal of Asian-Americans in the Canceled Sitcom, All American Girl Ever since arriving in this country, Asian-Americans have been misunderstood and discriminated against. Lately things have gotten better, but there are still people trying to further improve their situation. Margaret Cho, a Korean-American, is one of them. In the late 1990s she got her own sitcom, All-American Girl. This was a perfect chance to improve the portrayal of Korean-Americans, and Asian-Americans in general. Positive Aspects ââ¬Å"All American Girlâ⬠showed many positive portrayals of Asians in a modern day society in California. The show is the first show in history to have a multi generational Asian cast portraying a Korean family in America. Theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Even though this show was canceled, it was the first show to have a dominantly Asian cast and hopefully will spark more successful shows like it. Negative Aspects As far as TV shows go, Asian Americans- like most other minorities- have been ridiculously under represented and poorly portrayed. All-American Girl was one show that attempted to change that. The show starred mostly Asian Americans and was one of very few that did not cast them as martial artists or service workers. Some argue that the show didnt do enough to better the portrayal of Asians, and still others argue that it may have even hurt. In either case, this was one of the first times that Asian Americans appeared in force on regular TV programming, and the world- or at least the country- was watching. There are a few problems with this show that detract from the positive elements it does have. One of them is that while the show did show factual representations of Asian-American culture, it made a joke out of them. Its unfortunate, but the show was a sitcom. One of the main problems with her show was that the network didnt know what to do with it. Marin (p. 70) quotes ABCs Entertainment president as saying that they needed to go for a Broad family audience . This greatly limited the subjects the show could cover and the manner in which they could cover them. Because of this audience, a cute neighbor girl has been added whose

Diagnosis and Treatment Free Essays
For many Americans it is difficult to come to terms with any type of medical diagnosis. Some may know the warning signs and simply ignore them. Unfortunately mental disorders have plagued many people for years. We will write a custom essay sample on Diagnosis and Treatment or any similar topic only for you Order Now Going without diagnosis and treatment can have devastating effects to themselves and their families. According to the National Institute of Mental Health ââ¬Å"Approximately 20.9 million American adults, or about 9.5 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year, have a mood disorderâ⬠(NIMH, 2009). These disorders come in several forms and can have many different warning signs. For some these signs or symptoms can be mild and for others the signs are immediately noticed. ââ¬Å"Mood disorders are characterized by disturbances in mood or prolonged emotional state sometimes referred to as affect.â⬠(Psychological Disorders, 2010) Because everyone has their own mental capacity it can be difficult for a professional to diagnose. Some people canââ¬â¢t cry unless it is a highly emotional situation, others can cry at the first sign of emotional distress. While others may show anger in a stressful situation and some may feel the tendency to laugh. These are all nature human behaviors; each of these emotions can also be signs or symptoms of mood disorders. Because these signs and symptoms are so broad and are also specific to several different mood disorders they can be misdiagnosed for years. The range of mood disorders can vary but there are significant signs and symptoms to look for. For some with mood disorders they have extreme highs and lows, meaning that they are extremely happy one minute and can be extremely sad the next. In patients with depression you may see that the ââ¬Å"person feels overwhelmed with sadness; they may have loss of interest in activities and display other symptoms such as guilt or feelings of worthlessness.â⬠(Psychological disorders, 2010) According to the National Institute for Mental Health ââ¬Å"Major Depressive Disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15-44â⬠(NIMH, 2009) These patients usually have experienced the loss of happiness in everyday life. They may be your co-worker, family or friend who has issues with concentration, sleep, or has become reclusive. Even though depression is a mood disorder in itself, there are several forms of depression. Generalized depression is the person who has become withdrawn from life; they may sleep too much or not enough. Another form of depression is clinical depression; this form is much more severe and can be deadly. Unfortunately ââ¬Å"depressed people may be plagues by suicidal thoughts or may even attempt suicide.â⬠(Psychological disorders, 2010) Apart of the signs and symptoms of clinical depression is that the down feel does not go away after time. Those with clinical depression stay depressed; they are unhappy and have moments of extreme depression. ââ¬Å"Some depressions can be so intense that people become psychotic-that is, they lose touch with reality.â⬠(Psychological disorders, 2010). This form can make people believe in a false reality. They often feel as though everyone is out to get them or that they are being subjected to inhuman activities. Depression can be treated in many ways depending on the severity of the disease. There are many drugs out on the market today to help with the symptoms of depression. Generalized depression has become a popular trend in commercial marketing. The signs and symptoms are often discussed and the public is educated on talking to their physician if they may have any of the signs of symptoms that are listed in the commercials. Because of the frequency of these commercials more and more people have followed the trend and are speaking to their physicians about the possibility of depression. According to the CDC ââ¬Å"approximately 15.7% more people were diagnosis with depression or related diagnosis in 2006 compared to 2005.â⬠(CDC, 2006) Some studies may suggest that the increase in diagnosis is directly related to the public awareness brought forth by the commercial campaigns to promote new medication to treat depression. The treatment for many forms of depression is through various forms of medication. These forms of medication are often referred to as antidepressants. The compounding for these drugs are typically neurotransmitters or inhibiters. Some help to produce or block particular chemicals in the brain that are possible causes for particular forms of depression. Counseling can also help those that are suffering the effects of depression. For some counseling may be prescribed with or without the assistance of medication. Speaking to a medical professional about the diagnosis of depression can help each patient to be individually treated for the symptoms of the depressive disorder. Even though the public has a higher level of awareness when it comes to depressive disorders it is still important to seek advice from a medical profession. Reference http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/the-numbers-count-mental-disorders-in-america/index.shtml How to cite Diagnosis and Treatment, Essay examples Diagnosis and Treatment Free Essays There are many psychological disorders which can cause people distress. Depression is one of the most common psychological disorders; throughout this paper, I will explain some of the causes of depression as well as symptoms and possible treatments. Depression is explained as a mood disorder that is characterized by overwhelming feelings of sadness, lack of interest in activities, and sometimes excessive guilt or feelings of worthlessness. We will write a custom essay sample on Diagnosis and Treatment or any similar topic only for you Order Now While everyone may feel depressed every now and then, not everyone will be diagnosed with clinical depression. People who have been diagnosed with clinical depression not only have the sad and empty feelings, they can have significant problems carrying on a normal lifestyle. The mental-health professionals look to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV-RT) which provides the framework for making the distinction between clinical depression and depression. A person must have at least five of the following symptoms, including at least one of the first two: depressed mood, loss of interest in pleasure, significant weight loss or gain, sleep disturbances, disturbances in motor activities, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, inability to concentrate, and recurrent thoughts of death. If these symptoms are present and are not due to any other medical conditions, a person will typically be diagnosed with major depression. There can be several causes for depression. Genetics can play a factor in the mood disorder; if a parent has a chemical imbalance, it is possible for the chemical imbalance to be passed down to their child or children. Psychological factors such as an awful experience as a child can play a role in depression. One other possible cause for depression is the social factor; an example of this is loss or unresolved grief. There are several forms of treatments for depression if a person wants the help. Seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist for therapy can be useful; although there are many forms of therapy, finding the right form of therapy is necessary. A therapy that may be helpful is client-centered therapy. Client therapy is explained as a nondirectional form of therapy which calls for unconditional positive regard of the client by the therapist with the goal of helping the client become fully functional. This form of therapy is called client-centered therapy because it places the responsibility for change on the person with the problems. Behavior therapy is another form of therapy that may be useful. Behavior therapy is based on the belief that all behavior is learned, and the object of therapy is to teach people new, more satisfying ways of behaving. To get over depression, behavior therapy can help a person learn new ways of handling loss and other hard situations people may be going through. Some techniques used may be classical conditioning, aversive conditioning, modeling, and operant conditioning. Drug therapy or antidepressants such as, Paxil, Welbutrin, Zoloft, Effexor, or Prozac may help as well. These tend to help people who have a chemical imbalance because these drugs work by reducing the uptake of serotonin in the nervous system, then increasing the concentration of serotonin active in the brain; however, people on these drugs should be monitored by health professionals as well as they may have some side effects. Finally, some people prefer to try herbal remedies to help with depression issues. Some people who have tried the drug therapy and were not able to find relief they want, have tried pills such as 5-HTP and St. Johnââ¬â¢s Wort, taken along with antioxidants. People who are taking these pills should also stay in contact with their health professionals and follow all directions closely. Depression can be a very serious disease; people who are suffering from depression may not realize it until it is too late. If a family member or friend believes someone they know might have a problem with depression, they should urge the person to speak to someone about the problem. While all of the treatments I spoke about previously can be helpful, the best way for a person to find the help that will work best for them is to speak to their health-care professional. Each person will need individualized help and may have to try several different therapies or drugs before finding the right combination for them. Reference Axia College of University of Phoenix.
